First Assistant Chief Richard J. Layton of the Freeport, New York FD died this morning following a mutual aid fire response into another community. Chief Layton had operated at the commercial building fire in the neighboring community of Baldwin and returned home after that.
At approximately 0700 hours this morning, following the fire, Chief Layton had been scheduled for routine surgery, where he very sadly passed away due to a medical emergency prior to the procedure.
