A vegetation fire torched about four acres near the Base Commissary just before 3pm this afternoon. The fire put up heavy smoke and snarled traffic on Interstate 5. Several nearby structures and power lines were threatened.
Camp Pendleton firefighters made an aggressive and rapid attack on the fire, which burned in a stand of thick brush and Eucalyptus trees. Oceanside and Carlsbad firefighters quickly responded to provide automatic aid.
The Commissary was briefly evacuated and several road closures were in effect until the forward progress of the fire was stopped and smoke conditions improved.
Three firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
